The Paris manuscript of Boccaccio’s Decameron overcame so much the genre of “collections of stories” that had preceded it both in Europe and in the Eastern tradition, which for many models that compare anything sufficiently explains the impressive modernity and freshness It brings the manuscript and the great pleasure produced by contemplating its extraordinary miniatures. Undoubtedly this is a true Renaissance treasure.
In the seventeenth century it belonged to the library of Marquis de Paulmy, founder of the library of the Arsenal in Paris, where he currently remains. The Marquis de Paulmy received as a legacy of his uncle, Count of Argenson. He, who he was Minister of War of Louis XV and passionate bibliophile, in 1748, during the war of succession of Austria, visited the Bourgogne Library in Brussels and brought to Paris a number of prestigious manuscripts, including this extraordinary Decameron, who commanded bound in morocco olive color and coat of arms, binding that remains today.
Ms. 5070 The Arsenal Library in Paris is undoubtedly the most important of the Decameron of Boccaccio few preserved manuscript. It contains the Italian version of the text but its first French translation, made around 1414 by the great French humanist Laurent de Premierfait. The manuscript is well documented. It was copied around 1445-1450 by the copyist Guillebert Mets, in Gramont, East Flanders for the Duke of Burgundy Philippe le Bon, a great collector and bibliophile. Of the two artists who illustrated the manuscript, we know that the first was of Flemish origin, who exercised in Tourani and Lille during the decade 1430-1440, specializing in books of hours. Its fine Italianate style is marked. The second of the artists named Jean Mansel, remarkable for the delicacy of its colors, it seems, he might have worked in Amiens.
The black plague, the Great Schism, the rivalries between feudal lords, the crusades, the rising urban bourgeoisie, constitute a lush tapestry where moralistic sermons and carefree customs are interwoven … In this context appears as Vittorre Branca, work more important in world literature and that more has influenced to this day: The Decameron of Boccaccio.
