Extraordinary and beautiful facsimile edition of the Cistercian Devotional of Herrenalb, or Cister’s Devotion, whose original of 1484 is conserved in the State Library of Berlin.
The medieval monastery of Herrenalber, located in the southern part of Germany, near the city of Ulm, at the time had a remarkable scriptorium, where the Cistercians could apply the rule of St. Benedict: ORA ET LABORA (pray and work). This work was produced in the year 1484 and elaborated by the cantor of the Johannes Zurn monastery of Nyposheim, according to the author himself material in the colophon of the manuscript.
It is a piece of great interest for several reasons. First, it is worth remembering that at that time the strong competition of printed books already existed. Therefore, the realization of a copy by hand supposed a will to continue with the secular tradition and also the desire to make a work that stands out for its beauty and form of execution. At that time books made manually enjoyed great prestige compared to the “mold.” In fact, Federico da Montefeltro, Duke of Urbino, exquisite bibliophile, strictly prohibited that no printed book should be included in the collections of his magnificent library.

Hand-bound facsimile in white leather on board, decorated in dry, nerves, 2 printed floors, golden edges, format 15.2 x 21 cm. 210 pages on special paper in aged parchment, containing 30 extraordinary full-page miniatures, of great expressiveness, with strong colors and gold, with a multitude of decorated and gilt initials. Curiously, this beautiful codex presents almost at the end of it, 24 scratched pages without texts, which can be applied, in the case of the facsimile copy, as a book for very personal and special annotations.

The book study of the work that accompanies the facsimile, has been developed by Elisa Ruíz García, in an extensive codicological, historical, artistic, palaeographic and textual study, who praised the edition as many Books of Hours have been edited but not in the case of the Devocionarios, being strangers in this type of facsimile editions of great luxury. Bound in hardcover with illustrated dust jacket, format 24.5 x 34 cm.
