Work of Pero Marcuello. Rich, profusely illustrated codex written for the Catholic Monarchs by a witness to the Conquest of Granada. Facsimile edition of the Spanish manuscript that is kept in the Condé de Chantilly Museum, France.
1995 facsimile edition of a curious and beautiful medium format and volume manuscript (148 vellum folios measuring 14.5 x 21.5 cm), currently kept in the magnificent Library of the Condé de Chantilly Museum (France) under the inaccurate title of “Devotional of the Queen Dª Juana who was called the Crazy”, signature 604 (1339) -XIV-D-14, which comes to be a rhymed memorial of the most resonant interior achievements of the Catholic Monarchs, especially focused on the end of the Reconquest, written by Pedro (or Pero) Marcuello, mayor of Calatorao (Zaragoza), between the years 1482 and 1502 to win the favor of the monarchs and their daughter, Princess Juana.
Apart from the historiographical value offered by the testimony of a spectator of the most exciting events in the history of Spain, and in addition to the literary interest of a text versified with undoubted ease, the 59 full-page miniatures of this forgotten manuscript and the numerous decorated initials and the borders of its text pages, both adorned with fine gold leaf applications, make it a true “rich” codex, the greatest exponent of Aragonese book painting of the transition from the Middle Ages to the Modern, that is, from Gothic to Renaissance art.
Facsimile with a beautiful stamped leather binding (restored reproduction of the Mudejar original that preserves the manuscript), format 16 x 22.5 cm. 304 pages, gilt side edge, preserving the original plastic dust jacket.
Dutch bound study book with leather spine with golden title and cloth, format 16 x 22.5 cm. 456 pages. Critical editing, study of the text and the miniatures, transcription and notes, by Estrella Ruiz-Gálvez y Priego, professor at the University of Caen (France); plus an analysis of the art of the miniatures of the codex by Ana Domínguez Rodríguez, from the Complutense University of Madrid.
Both volumes are presented in a box-case, open type, format 15.5 x 23 x 7.5 cm, lined to match with the same fabric as the study book.
