This book contains myths and legends from Central and South America, from the countries that are south of the border between Mexico and the United States. It includes accounts of some of the oldest civilizations, such as the Aztecs and Toltecs of Mexico, the Mayans and the Incas of Peru. From further south come the stories of the jungle tribes of Brazil, of the pampas of Paraguay and Argentina, and of the peoples of the colder regions in the extreme south of the continent. Many of these stories were written by the Spanish in the 16th century; others are more recent compilations, made by scholars and anthropologists and taken from the mouths of the Indians. The author has used the original sources to write this volume, which includes themes of gods and magical matters, as well as folk tales of animals.
