Juan Ponce de León embodies the characteristic type of the Spanish conqueror. He went to the Indies with the will to remain, in the company of his wife and children, and not with the intention of returning to Spain enriched. He fought the Indians when the circumstances required it, but he also tried by all means to make a peaceful colonization in Puerto Rico, attracting the caciques with the affability of his treatment. He discovered a verdant new land which he named Florida. His life was a constant struggle, a continuous effort to travel, populate, fight, attend to the future of his children and defend his rights before the Crown, without ever having a moment of respite. But, like all conquerors, luck eluded him at the last decisive moment.
Adelantado:
Formerly, military and political chief of a border province, and in times of peace, president or chief justice of the kingdom, province or certain district, and captain general in times of war.
