Description
Of all the books of hours commissioned Dona Mencia de Mendoza at least keeps one in the Valencia Institute of Don Juan in Madrid (26-III-41). The facsimile edition of this little book has 202 pages in parchment, 404 pages, written to the sheet 196, the rest are blank. It has 17 full-page miniatures with their borders and they represent the following topics:
Annunciation (f. 1), San Juan Evangelista (f 21), Luke (f. 23v), San Mateo (F.26), San Marcos (f. 28v), Resurrection of Lazarus (f. 35v), Visitation Mary to St. Elizabeth (d. 108), Natividad (f. 128V), Adoration of the Magi (d. 145), Presentation in the Temple (f. 153), Flight into Egypt (d. 161), Crowning Virgin (d. 175), San Juan Evangelista (f. 186v), Santiago (d. 190), Santa Catalina (d. 193) and St. Elizabeth of Hungary (f. 194v).
In addition, sheet 35, the shield of Count Henry of Nassau, first husband of Doña Mencia entire page appears. On the border of the thumbnail of Santiago the two headed eagle and the slogan “ultra plus” and on the border corresponding to Saint Elizabeth of Hungary and the opposite shield of Doña Mencia as Marquise of Zenete, reproduced four times.
The text is divided as follows: the calendar (2v-20 ff.); fragments of the Gospel of St. John (I, 1-14) (ff. 21-23), Luke (I, 26-35) (ff. 23-25v), San Mateo (II, 1-12) (ff . 26-28v) and San Marcos (XVI, 12-20) (ff 28v-30v), prayer of the Venerable Bede, priest, around 7 words spoken by Christ on the cross (ff 30v-34v)..; Office of the Dead (ff 36-75v.), Office of the Virgin (ff 76-185v.): Lauds (f 107v.), premium (128 f.), sixth (f 144V.), nona (f 152v.) eve (f 160v.) and complete (174V f.); anthems and prayers for the feast of Saints: San Juan Bautista (. ff 187-187v), San Juan Evangelista (ff 188-189v.), Santiago (189V-191v ff.), Santa Ana (191v- 192 ff.) Santa Catalina (ff. 192v-194) and St. Elizabeth of Hungary (ff 194-195v).
It has been given great care in reproducing the binding and in the original box in which this book is preserved as they are of great beauty and detail. The binding is made in leather, embossed with a gold decoration and also has a small wooden box lined in red velvet exterior aged and red satin inside. The chest is framed with antique silver plated hardware and also as the original, has a key lock. All these elements are equal to those of the original and are faithful reproductions.

Facsimile format 8 x 9 cm. irregular and gilt edges. Hand sewn. Leatherbound brown goat. Gold stamping on both sides with bronze fittings reproduced the original.
