Immense Buddhist monument, built on the island of Java from the end of the 8th century, the Borobudur has no equal in the world, due to its dimensions and the magnificence of its bas-reliefs. This work allows us to penetrate for the first time into the heart of this stone mandala, and to approach the Mahayana Buddhist pantheon by reading daily life and the Indo-Javanese rites sculpted there.
The Buddhist texts illustrated in the “stone book” that is the Borobudur are: the “Mahâ-Karmavibhanga” (Great Classification of Acts), the “Lalîtavistara” (terrestrial life of the Buddha), the “Jâtaka” and the “Avadana ” (moral stories that describe the previous lives of Buddha and his disciples), the “Gandavyûha” (esoteric text that evokes the search of the young Sudhana, the infinity of the Buddhas gathered in one, and different appearances), and its corollary the “Samantabhadra (charî) pranidhâna” (vow made by Samantabhadra to realize the great awakening and make it shared by all).
