Description
Facsimile reproduction from 2001 of the map that represents the entire Mississippi River basin, whose coastline was discovered by Alfonso Álvarez de Pineda in 1519 and the course of the river by Hernando de Soto between 1538 and 1543, its tributaries and the settlements of indigenous peoples are indicated.
“Map of the Mississippi dedicated to the Most Excellent Lord Duke of Jovenazo by his servant Don Armando de Arce, Baron of Lahontan, 1699. General Archive of the Indies”
The style of the map is basically pictorial like others of its time. It is framed in a turning point in Spanish politics in the face of French competition in an area that Spain had initially dismissed.
Facsimile of the original preserved in the General Archive of the Indies, Seville. Format 74.5 x 52.5 cm. Presented in a luxury silk and gold-stamped leather folder. Complemented with a descriptive study by María Antonia Colomar, format 21 x 30 cm.
