Description
Elegant and beautiful edition under the title of “My Cid Campeador” and that includes the texts of “Cantar de mio Cid”, “Mocedades de Rodrigo” and “Chronicle of the famous cavallero Cid Ruy Díez Campeador”, carried out in 2006 by the Fundación José Antonio de Castro for his book collection “Library Castro”.
The “Cantar de mio Cid” is the most precious jewel of Castilian minstrel art and one of the great epic poems of medieval Europe, it has been preserved for us in a single codex that is kept in the National Library of Spain in its security camera (Ms. Vitr. 7-17).
The medieval epic song “Mocedades de Rodrigo”, between clerical and juglaresco, is known by several more or less successful and acceptable titles: “Song of the youth of Rodrigo”, “Song of Rodrigo”, “Recast of the youth of Rodrigo” , “Rhymed Chronicle of the Cid” or “Song of Rodrigo and King Fernando”. It is a Cidian text that is less read than it deserves, because although its quality is not what is required of a classic, it reveals curious nuances in the literary treatment that is made of the historical character who acts in it as the protagonist, still in his youthful age, stage of his life that does not get to discover his most famous canonical “Cantar”; It is also interesting for the vision and consideration that the literary hero has deserved for the popular opinion of yesteryear and, in some cases, for the image that has been forged of it from the Middle Ages to the present. The only extant manuscript copy of this work is preserved in the National Library of France.
For the transcription of the “Chronicle of the famous cavallero Cid Ruy Díez Campeador” copy R-897 of the National Library of Spain has been used. A work that was spread through the printing press on three separate occasions for a period of 40 years: Burgos in 1512, Medina del Campo in 1552 and Burgos in 1593.
A book, as you can see, that contemplates a complete stage of the history of Castile under the epic adventures of the most famous knight in the history of Spain, not sufficiently valued by the “intellectuality” of a country with a complex of his History.
The book contains a very entertaining, and at the same time critical, 100-page study of these works by José María Viña Liste and the complete texts transcribed in Old Spanish, according to the original medieval editions mentioned.
